AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND January 19, 2025, NZT | The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix came to a dramatic close with an Australian win on rival waters. After delivering a racing master class across the weekend, the Flying Roo claimed a well-deserved victory in a Final between three of the league’s most dominant teams – Australia, Spain and Emirates GBR.
Driver Tom Slingsby said, “This win means so much to us – the team set us up so well. We had an amazing last race. It felt like we were fighting the British on the first leg, and then the Spanish caught us on the final, upwind leg. They [Spain] had chosen to sort of concede and take a second, but they went for it and went for the win, and we managed to get around them.”
The Rolex SailGP Championship will debut in front of its largest ticketed crowd this weekend as the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix touches down in Auckland (January 18-19, 2025). A cheering crowd of 25,000 fans are set to watch from the inner-city Race Stadium and sold-out spectator fleet.
The Auckland course is the shortest on the 2025 Season Calendar. With gusty, top-end conditions on the forecast, teams will have plenty to prepare for as the global racing championship rolls out new high-speed titanium “T-Foils’’ for the first time in racing.
It’s all go this weekend on Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour as the New Zealand SailGP Team, led by Peter Burling, prepares to race in front of a home crowd. Thousands of fans are expected to line the shores, cheering on the Black Foils in their pursuit of a thrilling victory. AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND January 14, 2025 NZT | After nearly two years of rigorous testing, SailGP has rolled out its new high-speed titanium ‘T-foils,’ across the league’s international F50 fleet. Five of 12 national teams took flight using the new foils during an action-packed training session earlier today. T-Foils will be introduced as part of the high-speed configuration for the first time in racing this weekend in Auckland (January 18-19, 2025). The innovation aims to deliver higher speeds and closer competition for the global racing championship.

The Black Foils are back-to-back-winners of the Rolex SailGP Championship’s season-opening event.
New Zealand Driver Peter Burling said, “Awesome play from the group – I mean as a new team to get to the final this week – it’s one of the hardest things in this light air. And we really pulled it out this season and got a great start and hit it right at mark one. I made a bad choice making it a bit more complicated – taking a right turn – which put us right back in the pack but then it was clean, and it was good to race from there to take a win.”
