A guide to the snow season","description":"Snow falls in New Zealand from late May to October. If you want to plan a snow holiday, July and August are usually the best months.","body":"Snow falls on New Zealand’s mountains mainly from late autumn through spring. If you want to plan a snow holiday, July and August are usually the safest months. Winter runs from June to August, but a snowy mountain does not mean the nearby town will have snow on the ground.<br><br>\r\nThat difference matters when choosing where to stay. You can spend the day skiing above Queenstown or Wānaka, then return to a town with clear roads and no snow outside your accommodation.\r\n<p>\r\n<br>\r\n</p>\r\n<p>\r\nNew Zealand’s snow season, month by month\r\n</p>\r\n<table>\r\n <thead>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>Month</th>\r\n <th>What to expect</th>\r\n </tr>\r\n </thead>\r\n <tbody>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>May</th>\r\n <td>Snow can begin settling on higher mountains, but it is too early to count on a ski holiday.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>June</th>\r\n <td>Winter begins. Ski areas usually start opening during the month, depending on conditions.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>July</th>\r\n <td>One of the best months to plan a trip if seeing snow or skiing is the priority.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>August</th>\r\n <td>Another strong choice for mountain snow, skiing and snowboarding.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>September</th>\r\n <td>Spring brings longer days, while snow often remains at ski areas and higher elevations.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n <tr>\r\n <th>October</th>\r\n <td>Some ski areas can remain open into October. Check their dates and conditions before making plans.</td>\r\n </tr>\r\n </tbody>\r\n</table>\r\n\r\n<p>\r\nNew Zealand’s ski season generally runs from mid-June to mid-October, with July and August considered the peak months. Opening dates and snow cover change from year to year.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nWhere does it snow in New Zealand?\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nSnow is most common in the mountains of the South Island, particularly the Southern Alps and the ski areas around Queenstown, Wānaka, Canterbury and Mackenzie. In the North Island, Mt Ruapehu and the Central Plateau are the main destinations for a mountain snow experience. Snow can occasionally reach lower areas elsewhere during cold outbreaks, but those falls are difficult to plan a holiday around.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nQueenstown and Wānaka\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nQueenstown and Wānaka are popular bases for a winter trip. Nearby ski areas include Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone. The mountains may be covered in snow while the towns themselves are snow-free, so book a mountain visit if you want to get close to it.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nCanterbury and Mackenzie\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nCanterbury and Mackenzie offer ski areas and wide views of snow-covered mountains. Mt Hutt is near Methven, while the Mackenzie region includes ski areas around Lake Tekapo and Ōhau. A winter visit to the Aoraki/Mount Cook area can also offer alpine scenery, though conditions on walking tracks need checking separately.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nMt Ruapehu and the Central Plateau\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nMt Ruapehu is the North Island’s best-known ski destination, with Whakapapa and Tūroa on the mountain. It is a useful choice if you are travelling from the North Island, but check the ski area’s daily report before heading up: mountain weather and access can change quickly.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nDoes it snow in New Zealand’s towns and cities?\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nSometimes, but town snowfall is much less dependable than mountain snow. Temperature drops with altitude, which is why a ski field can have winter conditions while the town below does not. If seeing snow is essential to your trip, choose somewhere with access to a ski area or mountain snow activity.\r\n</p>\r\n<h2>\r\nWhat is the best time to visit for snow?\r\n</h2>\r\n<p>\r\nChoose July or August if you have fixed travel dates and snow is the main reason for your visit. September can be a good option for spring skiing and mountain views, but the experience depends on that season’s snowfall and the weather during your stay. No particular week guarantees fresh snow.\r\n</p>\r\n<p>\r\nBefore travelling, check the latest weather forecast, road conditions and the ski area’s report. If you plan to walk in alpine terrain, check the Department of Conservation’s advice for that specific track; snow and avalanche conditions can make a summer walk very different in winter.&nbsp;\r\n</p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe simplest way to plan it: visit in July or August, stay near a mountain destination that suits your trip, and allow some flexibility for the weather.\r\n</p>","thumbnail_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/post/when-does-it-snow-in-new-zealand/image","images":[{"url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/post/when-does-it-snow-in-new-zealand/image","width":768,"height":512}],"hls_url":null,"video_stream_url":null,"embed_url":null,"publisher":{"id":"1","slug":"snowfall-nz","name":"Snowfall NZ","logo_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/logo","url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/"},"region":null,"category":null,"discovery":{"regions":[],"categories":[],"experiences":[],"seasons":[],"audiences":[],"topics":[]},"published_at":"2026-09-29T23:12:40+00:00","updated_at":"2026-09-30T04:31:52+00:00","sponsor":null,"view_count":23,"like_count":2,"canonical_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/post/when-does-it-snow-in-new-zealand"},{"id":"48bc2a84-39a3-49c7-8366-e8f0bd55ebcd","type":"video","article_type":null,"title":"Ski Treble Cone, Wānaka","description":"Ski Treble Cone - New Zealand's premier alpine playground, offering great off-piste terrain and stunning views across Lake Wānaka.","body":null,"thumbnail_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/watch/48bc2a84-39a3-49c7-8366-e8f0bd55ebcd/thumbnail","images":[],"hls_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/media/hls/48bc2a84-39a3-49c7-8366-e8f0bd55ebcd/master.m3u8","video_stream_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/watch/48bc2a84-39a3-49c7-8366-e8f0bd55ebcd/stream","embed_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/embed/48bc2a84-39a3-49c7-8366-e8f0bd55ebcd","publisher":{"id":"1","slug":"snowfall-nz","name":"Snowfall NZ","logo_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/logo","url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/"},"region":"South Island","category":"Skiing","discovery":{"regions":[{"label":"South Island","slug":"south-island","primary":false},{"label":"Wānaka","slug":"wanaka","primary":false}],"categories":[{"label":"Skiing","slug":"skiing","primary":false},{"label":"Snowboarding","slug":"snowboarding","primary":false}],"experiences":[{"label":"Adventure","slug":"adventure","primary":false},{"label":"Family","slug":"family","primary":false},{"label":"Nature","slug":"nature","primary":false}],"seasons":[{"label":"Winter","slug":"winter","primary":false},{"label":"Spring","slug":"spring","primary":false}],"audiences":[{"label":"Experienced","slug":"experienced","primary":false}],"topics":[]},"published_at":"2026-09-22T22:17:28+00:00","updated_at":"2026-10-08T02:12:04+00:00","sponsor":null,"view_count":14,"like_count":6,"canonical_url":"https://seenewzealand.co.nz/snowfall-nz/watch/ski-treble-cone-wanaka"},{"id":"3d8a8f1f-3597-40bb-8ea8-fb7c7f6f74bc","type":"video","article_type":null,"title":"Ski The Remarkables, Queenstown","description":"Queenstown's ski field with 449 hectares of terrain.
