Happy Bay News is a youth-led project that produces a seasonal newspaper
Happy Bay News stands out as a beacon of positivity and youth empowerment in Hawke’s Bay. Launched in 2019 during a youth photography workshop led by Shayne Jeffares, this initiative has blossomed into a vibrant platform where young voices are amplified, and community stories are celebrated.
Happy Bay News is a youth-led project that produces a seasonal newspaper, a weekly podcast titled “Happy Waves,” and maintains an active online presence. The team, comprising young individuals from Hastings, Napier, and Central Hawke’s Bay, is dedicated to highlighting the unsung heroes and positive developments within their communities. Their mission is to counteract the often negative portrayal of youth in mainstream media by showcasing stories of inspiration, resilience, and community spirit.
The initiative has garnered support from local councils and funders, enabling the distribution of 2,500 copies of their newspaper across Hastings. Additionally, their podcast “Happy Waves” has gained recognition, winning the Youth Broadcast award in 2024 from Radio Hawke’s Bay.
This platform not only provides valuable media skills to its contributors but also fosters intergenerational connections, as evidenced by interviews bridging age gaps and sharing diverse perspectives.
Happy Bay News continues to seek passionate individuals aged 15-20 to join their team, offering opportunities in writing, photography, podcasting, and more. By engaging with this initiative, young people can develop practical skills, build confidence, and contribute positively to their communities.
