Sometimes, you are lucky enough to visit a truly magical place; Kuratau Lagoon is Located near the southern edge of Lake Taupō in New Zealand and is a natural lagoon shaped by the Kuratau River as it flows into the lake. Fed by surrounding catchments and rainfall, the lagoon’s calm waters provide an ideal spot for swimming (the water is quite cold) or simply appreciating the surrounding native bush and birdlife. The area is stunning as the light reflects off the still water, giving it an ethereal feel – the water, it seems to glow, creating a peaceful, untouched atmosphere.

Kuratau Lagoon: Water Safety Notice

It has been brought to our attention that extra care is needed at Kuratau Lagoon due to the way water levels are managed upstream. There is no fixed or public schedule for water releases into the lagoon.

As part of the Kuratau Power Station system, water can be released from Lake Kuratau at any time and without warning, depending on power generation needs. Because the lagoon sits in the original riverbed, water levels can rise quickly and unexpectedly, creating strong currents and potential drowning risk.

Please note: We have researched this to the best of our ability but could not find a single official page that clearly outlines operating times or water release warnings specific to Kuratau Lagoon. Guidance is based on general hydro safety advice and recent community discussion. If you are unsure about water levels or gate activity, the safest option is to stay out of the lagoon and always follow warning signs and local advice.
