Glenorchy, New Zealand – February 5, 2025

Tāhuna Glenorchy has been officially recognised as the 23rd International Dark Sky Sanctuary, marking a significant achievement for the region and reinforcing New Zealand’s commitment to preserving its natural nightscapes.

The designation, awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), comes after thoroughly evaluating the area’s minimal light pollution and outstanding quality of starry skies. This accolade not only celebrates the pristine environmental conditions of Tāhuna Glenorchy but also highlights ongoing efforts to balance tourism with ecological conservation.

This news has excited astronomers, nature lovers, and tourists. Local visitor centres plan to offer guided stargazing tours and teach more about the need to protect our dark skies.
