Snow forecasts aren’t big in New Zealand for January – but we just got one!

A burst of southerly cold air moving up the country is lining up conditions that could bring January snow to several of New Zealand’s ski fields, right in the middle of summer! While all fields remain closed for the off-season, the idea of fresh snow in January is enough to make skiers think about their clothing choices. Beach or slopes?

In the South Island, several ski fields are showing the potential for light snowfall at elevation as freezing levels dip:

  • Cardrona Alpine Resort – a dusting to around 1-3cm possible on the upper mountain
  • The Remarkables Ski Area – around 1-4cm possible at higher elevations
  • Coronet Peak – a light dusting, up to 2cm in colder periods
  • Treble Cone – the best Otago chance, with 2-5cm possible on the upper mountain
  • Mount Hutt is also in the mix, with around 2-5cm possible if freezing levels dip low enough.

On the Central Plateau, both Whakapapa and Turoa are lining up for one of the more eye-catching forecasts – up to 5-10cm of snow possible on the upper slopes if conditions play out as expected.

No, this isn’t ski season starting early – lifts won’t be spinning and runs won’t be groomed – but it’s a classic reminder of how unpredictable New Zealand’s alpine climate can be.

We’ll see if the January snow eventuates – but either way, it’s pretty cool writing about snow in the middle of summer
