The NZ Herald has revealed its top 5 best beaches for 2026, following thousands of reader votes from across the country.
Taking the overall title for the second year running is Waipū Cove, which secured the most votes across all five categories. The Northland favourite continues to stand out for its long stretch of golden sand, rolling surf, rock pools, strong lifesaving presence and popular beachfront camping – earning recognition as an all-round classic Kiwi summer beach. We have spent many summers on this beach.

Category winners highlight the diversity of New Zealand’s coastline
Kaiteriteri Beach was voted Best Family Beach, praised for its sheltered waters, expansive campground and role as the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Langs Beach claimed Best Hidden Gem, valued for its sweeping curve of sand, gentle waves and quiet, unspoilt feel despite its proximity to Waipū Cove.
Rounding out the list, Manu Bay in Raglan was named Best Surf Beach, a decision echoed internationally with the World Surf League confirming it as a 2026 Championship Tour stop. Mount Maunganui took out Best City Beach, remaining a firm favourite among voters after featuring as a finalist in multiple categories.

Together, the 2026 winners reflect a coastline that continues to balance world-class surf, family-friendly shores, hidden gems and iconic urban beaches – all shaped by the places New Zealanders return to summer after summer.
