Event Date: 27 November 2026

One of New Zealand’s most iconic cycling events, the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, is set to return on Saturday 28 November 2026, bringing thousands of riders and supporters back to the central North Island.

First held in 1977, the event has grown into the country’s largest cycling occasion, with participants travelling from across New Zealand and around the world to take on the challenge of riding around Lake Taupō.

At the heart of the event is the legendary 160km “Round the Lake” ride, a full circuit of New Zealand’s largest lake. It’s a demanding but rewarding journey, combining endurance, scenery, and a strong sense of achievement.

What makes the event stand out is its accessibility. Riders of all abilities can take part, with multiple event options ranging from short, family-friendly rides through to road, gravel and mountain bike challenges. Distances span from around 16km to over 300km, ensuring there’s something for everyone – from first-timers to seasoned cyclists.

Beyond the ride itself, the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge has evolved into a full weekend experience. The event village and cycling expo draw thousands of visitors, while local community groups play a key role in delivering the event, benefiting directly from volunteer contributions.

With stunning lake views, a festival-like atmosphere, and a reputation built over decades, the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge remains a highlight on New Zealand’s sporting calendar – whether you’re riding, supporting, or simply soaking up the atmosphere.
