Mt Hutt Ski Area, located in the Canterbury region of New Zealand’s South Island near the town of Methven, has been voted the country’s best ski resort for ten consecutive years at the World Ski Awards. The resort offers wide-open terrain with steep, leg-burning runs and reliable heavy snowfall, providing skiers with a genuine alpine experience. With clear, expansive views of the Southern Alps and close proximity to Christchurch, Mt Hutt stands out as a benchmark for New Zealand skiing. For those searching for an authentic Canterbury ski destination, Mt Hutt is an essential stop on the South Island’s winter map.
Mt Hutt to open early for 2025 ski season
Mt Hutt is set to open on May 31, marking its earliest season start since 2009. A solid 1.2 metres of snow has given the Canterbury ski field a head start, making it the first in New Zealand, and Australasia – to open for 2025.
The mountain will open for weekends only to begin with, including the King’s Birthday holiday on June 2. Full daily operations are expected from June 14, depending on weather.
It’s a strong signal that the winter season is off to a promising start.
