Mt Hutt scores big ahead of opening day
New Zealand’s ski season 2025 is officially underway after the first major snowstorm of 2025 swept across the country between 5–8 June, delivering much-needed snow to ski fields from Canterbury to Central Otago.
Mt Hutt led the charge, recording an impressive 90cm base by Sunday afternoon after two successive cold fronts brought heavy snow and ideal powder conditions. The field has confirmed it will open this Friday, 13 June, right on schedule.
Other South Island ski areas, including Porters, Mt Dobson, Cardrona, and Coronet Peak, reported good coverage across upper slopes, with snowmakers taking full advantage of cold overnight temperatures to build on the base.
In the North Island, Ruapehu’s fields saw snow over the weekend, and snowmaking continues in preparation for later openings.
With more snow in the forecast for June and strong early-season conditions in the south, 2025 is shaping up to be a promising winter for New Zealand’s ski industry.
