Australia and New Zealand remain tied for first on 61 points, with Emirates GBR now in third.

#7 Black Foils win in Portsmouth, take championship lead
20 July – Portsmouth, UK
The New Zealand’s Black Foils beat Emirates Great Britain, taking top honours in their first-ever SailGP appearance in the UK port city, and jumping to the top of the 2025 season standings.
The final, held in choppy Solent conditions, saw a fierce three-boat battle between New Zealand, Switzerland (congratulations for making their first final), and Great Britain. Despite pressure from both sides, Peter Burling and his team held their nerve to cross the line first.
“It was nice racing out there,” said Burling. “We were riding some pretty challenging conditions and to pull off today, as a group, we’re super pleased. Going into the European series as the winners is something we’re really proud of.”
It was a strong showing from Emirates GBR, who finished second after a solid weekend, while Switzerland celebrated their first-ever event final, ultimately finishing third after a technical issue stopped them in the closing moments of the race.
#6 Spain SailGP wins New York, takes championship lead
8 June – New York, USA
Spain SailGP claimed victory in New York, defeating the Black Foils and France in the final to secure top honours, and crucial championship points. The result moves Spain to the top of the overall leaderboard, just ahead of the BONDS Flying Roos (Australia). A strong weekend for New Zealand lifts the Black Foils into third overall.
This marks Spain’s second U.S. event win of the season, following their triumph in San Francisco back in March.
New York’s waters delivered plenty of drama, with five different winners across the six fleet races. The standout moment? A historic first win for the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team in race four – a breakthrough performance and a well-earned result.
#5 Spain SailGP Team wins in San Francisco
23 March – San Francisco, USA
Spain has claimed victory in San Francisco, beating NorthStar Canada and France in a thrilling final to become the fifth different winner in as many events this season.
The result came on a dramatic day, with a major incident in race seven, Australia’s wing collapsed shortly after the start. Fortunately, all athletes were safe, with no injuries reported. The cause of the failure is still under investigation. Despite the mishap, Australia moves into first overall in the championship standings.
The final race was tight from the start. France crossed the line with speed and led to the first mark, but a smart split at gate two saw Spain take control. They held their lead through to the finish, with Canada crossing second and France rounding out the podium.
#4 Canada SailGP wins in Los Angeles
17 March – Los Angeles, USA
NorthStar Canada ended a two-year victory drought with a standout win in Los Angeles, claiming their first SailGP event title since Christchurch in March 2023.
Led by double Olympic gold medallist Giles Scott, Canada outpaced rivals New Zealand and Australia in the final, securing the top spot and becoming the fourth different winner in as many events this season. The result highlights just how competitive the 2025 SailGP season has become.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Scott said: “I think we sailed really well all weekend. We got off the water yesterday second overall, and we still felt really frustrated. We put it together today.”
#3 Great Britain SailGP wins in Sydney
9 February – Sydney, Australia
The Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team claimed their first win of the 2025 season in Sydney, securing victory on Championship Sunday in front of a packed spectator fleet and shoreline crowds.
It was also a personal milestone for driver Dylan Fletcher, who earned his first event win in SailGP after a tense three-boat final against NorthStar Canada and Australia. The Kiwis, meanwhile, missed out on a podium finish, leaving Australia without a race win on home waters.
Much of the final came down to a battle between Fletcher and Canada’s Giles Scott – the very sailor Fletcher replaced at the start of the season. In a close finish, Fletcher rounded the final mark just ahead of Scott to secure the win.
#2 Australia wins SailGP Auckland
19 January – Auckland, New Zealand
The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix wrapped up with a dramatic win for Australia, as the Flying Roos took victory on rival waters in front of a packed Auckland waterfront.
After a strong weekend performance, the Aussies held off Spain and Emirates Great Britain in a high-stakes final featuring three of the season’s top teams. It was a hard-fought win for skipper Tom Slingsby, who credited his crew for setting up the final showdown.
“This win means so much to us – the team set us up so well. We had an amazing last race. It felt like we were fighting the British on the first leg, and then the Spanish caught us on the final, upwind leg. They [Spain] had chosen to sort of concede and take a second, but they went for it and went for the win, and we managed to get around them.”
#1 New Zealand wins SailGP season opener in Dubai
24 November 2024 – Dubai, UAE
New Zealand’s Black Foils have opened the 2025 SailGP season in style, taking out the first event of the year with a commanding win in Dubai. It’s the team’s third consecutive victory in the UAE, continuing their strong form from the end of last season.
Skipper Peter Burling and his crew edged out Emirates Great Britain and the United States in the final, navigating tricky light-air conditions on the waters of Port Mina Rashid. The win also makes the Black Foils back-to-back champions of SailGP’s season-opening event.
Reflecting on the race, Burling said: “Awesome play from the group – I mean as a new team to get to the final this week – it’s one of the hardest things in this light air. And we really pulled it out this season and got a great start and hit it right at mark one. I made a bad choice making it a bit more complicated – taking a right turn – which put us right back in the pack but then it was clean, and it was good to race from there to take a win.”
