Turoa Ski Area, 2025 ski season

We wanted snow for the 2025 ski season!

Boy, we’ve got snow! The snow gods, and of course the weather, have answered. Over the last couple of weeks, ski fields in both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand have received bonus snowfalls for this time of year (see the table below for the numbers). Spring skiing is shaping up to be one of the best in many seasons – and it’s still snowing!

We thought, based on the predicted weather patterns (see our article on what we predicted – above-average temps, etc.), that winter was pretty well done and dusted for the 2025 ski season.

But boy, were we wrong. Who knew? We didn’t, as we wrote articles on how the club fields were feeling the impact from limited snowfall. Big snow was just around the corner – unfortunately, still a little too late for a few fields to open. Many of the ski fields have received surprising snowfall for this time of year, which has created a sense of excitement.

The North Island has had a very pleasant surprise

Struggling with limited coverage right up to mid-August, Mt Ruapehu now boasts some of the best snowfall we’ve seen at this time of year. To give you an idea of what we’re seeing: the boneyard, which you usually ski through in the gully, is now completely full of snow – and flat!

So what does this mean?

A lot, if you were planning spring skiing for the 2025 season, you are in luck! There’s no shortage of snow. Get your skis or board, head up to the mountains, and experience what we feel, is arguably the best time of the year to ski.

It will be interesting to see if any of the ski fields extend their seasons

We noticed today on Instagram that Snow Farm is extending theirs to 28 September. Revisit this page to see what other ski fields might follow suit. As soon as we know, you’ll know – and we’ll publish the dates.
