Warbirds Over Wanaka, set against the stunning Southern Alps, is New Zealand’s premier airshow
Held every second year at Wanaka Airport, it attracts aircraft enthusiasts from around the country and the world, with more than 60,000 people attending the event.
First staged in 1988, the airshow has built a reputation for combining historic aircraft with modern aviation displays. Around 100 aircraft typically take part, ranging from World War II-era warbirds through to contemporary fighter jets.
The flying programme includes classic aircraft such as Spitfires alongside high-speed jet displays and scheduled pyrotechnic sequences. The Southern Alps provide a natural backdrop, with the airfield layout allowing clear viewing across most areas of the venue.
Ground displays form a significant part of the programme. These include static aircraft, aviation technology exhibits, and industry presence such as Air Force recruitment stands. Visitors also have the option to book scenic or experience flights during the event.
Ticketing is structured across multiple tiers. General admission is available, along with hospitality options including Gold Pass, Silver Pass, Hurricane Tim Marquee, and the Titanium Lounge.
Warbirds Over Wanaka remains one of the largest event draws in the South Island, combining air displays, ground exhibits, and visitor access in a single weekend programme.
