Kawarau Gorge Trail - opening early 2026
Carved through one of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes, the upcoming Kawarau Gorge Trail promises to be a breathtaking addition to Central Otago’s cycle network. Stretching 32 kilometres between Gibbston Valley and Bannockburn, the trail will open in early 2026, linking Queenstown with the region’s network of world-class Great Rides.
The route follows the Kawarau River, winding through steep schist cliffs and sun-baked hills where gold was once mined and the sound of the river still echoes through the gorge. Two suspension bridges will carry riders high above the water, offering spectacular views of turquoise rapids and the rugged contours of the valley.
A trail of contrast and character
The Kawarau Gorge Trail combines the wild beauty of Central Otago with the easy rhythm of a modern ride. On one side lies the highway; on the other, a quieter world of rock, tussock and light. The path curves through the gorge, revealing a new view at every turn – wide skies, folded hills, and the river glinting below.
A place where engineering meets landscape: bridges that seem to float above the water, an underpass that slips beneath the Nevis Bluff, and trails that will open parts of the gorge few people have ever seen from this perspective.
Heritage and Flavour
Along the way, the trail connects to Gibbston Valley’s vineyards and Bannockburn’s gold-rush heritage. Riders will be able to stop at cellar doors, explore the Goldfields Mining Centre, or simply pause to take in the scenery that once lured prospectors to the South.
A glimpse of what’s ahead
When it opens, the Kawarau Gorge Trail will link into more than 500 kilometres of connected rides, including the Lake Dunstan, Clutha Gold, Roxburgh Gorge, and Otago Central Rail Trails. It’s expected to become a key link between Queenstown and Central Otago – a ride that captures both the region’s beauty and its sense of adventure.
