Mangawhero Falls, very easy waterfall walk with a link to Middle-earth
Mangawhero Falls is located 16 km up Ohakune Mountain Road on Mt Ruapehu. A viewing platform provides clear views of the Mangawhero waterfall just minutes from the road.
In Tongariro National Park, it’s worth a stop if you’re driving up Ohakune Mountain Road, heading toward the Turoa ski field (the sign is on the right just before the sharp bend – on the left when coming down), or exploring the southern side of the mountain.
The walk is short and very easy. In winter, the falls often freeze into dramatic icicles, while in warmer months the water drops hard through dark volcanic rock, framed by beech forest.
A Lord of the Rings connection
Fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers may be interested to know that the Mangawhero Falls was used as a filming location. This is where Gollum fishes in Ithilien, before being confronted by Faramir.
The waterfall itself didn’t appear exactly as you see it today. Like many scenes in the films, it was digitally enhanced and combined with other locations, including Tawhai Falls, to create the final cinematic look.
