The Motatapu, established in 2005, is one of New Zealand’s most iconic off-road sporting events, attracting runners, riders, e-bikers and walkers from across Aotearoa and around the world to the Southern Lakes. Held annually each March, the event traverses the breathtaking Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations – high-country terrain normally closed to the public and opened for one day a year exclusively for this event.
Whether you’re running, walking, or riding, there’s something for everyone. The atmosphere is electric, the scenery unforgettable, and the sense of achievement unmatched. Many participants tackle it with friends, family, or workmates – some even turn it into a reunion or milestone celebration.
Known for its challenging-yet-achievable courses, the Motatapu has earned bucket-list status for both elite athletes and weekend adventurers. The 2026 edition features five unique events, offering challenges for all ages and abilities.
