A dramatic crash between the Black Foils and DS Team France brought the opening day of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix to an abrupt halt on Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour on February 14, 2026

The dramatic crash for Black Foils occurred at the start of fleet race three in gusty conditions and was dramatic to watch, as the Black Foils appeared to lose control of their boat and come to a sudden stop directly in front of Team France — all at speeds of more than 80 km/h. It was a testament to Quentin Delapierre’s reactions that he was able to swerve away from the New Zealand crew. Without that manoeuvre, the outcome could have been far worse.

The accident resulted in two athletes being taken to hospital in stable condition. All other crew members were cleared of injuries. Both teams were ruled out of the remainder of the event.
