Known for its postcard views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the glacier-fed river below. The swing bridge has been permanently closed following damage from heavy Easter rain.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) confirmed the decision, citing years of ongoing erosion and increased risks from extreme weather. “We’ve done everything we can,” said Shan Baththana, DOC’s Director of Asset Management. “But with more rain and snow coming, it’s no longer safe.”
While the full track is currently interrupted, the first section – including the initial swing bridge – remains open. In its place, a new 189-metre suspension bridge is already under construction, with plans to open in autumn 2026. It will be the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in New Zealand.
DOC Aoraki/Mount Cook Operations Manager Sally Jones called the closure disappointing but necessary. “Public safety is number one,” she said. “The new bridge will be stronger, safer, and built to handle what nature throws at it.”
In the meantime, DOC is encouraging visitors to explore alternative walks in the area, including the Kea Point Track, and to always stay on marked paths to protect both themselves and the fragile alpine environment.
