Matariki Celebrations and Snow at Tūroa This Weekend

Snow, culture, and celebration in Ohakune this Friday

Tūroa Ski Area will officially open its Alpine Meadow run this Saturday 21 June, just in time for the Matariki long weekend, with over 2,000 visitors expected to descend on the mountain for snow play, beginner skiing, and sightseeing.

The weekend begins with the live Matariki mā Puanga broadcast from Tirorangi Marae at 5:45am Friday, featuring the hautapu ceremony to mark the Māori New Year. The event will be aired nationally on TVNZ, Whakaata Māori, and RNZ.

Tūroa’s Ohakune HQ, including Freddie’s Tasting Room and retail, will be open Friday, ahead of ski lift operations on Saturday. Full seven-day operations are due to begin 28 June, weather permitting.

“We’re proud to be part of such a meaningful celebration,” said Tūroa CEO Jono Dean. “This is a time for whānau, reflection, and creating new winter traditions.”

With clear skies forecast, visitors are also encouraged to enjoy early-morning Matariki stargazing, with the Ruapehu region offering some of the best pre-dawn views in Aotearoa.
