Wellington Airport unveils new artwork by Wētā Workshop

Wellington Airport has revealed a striking new terminal centrepiece: Manu Muramura, a 15-metre illuminated bird sculpture created by Wētā Workshop

Manu Muramura is inspired by the pūrākau (story) of taniwha Ngake and Whātaitai of Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington harbour. Longing to explore, Ngake broke free from the harbour but Whātaitai became trapped. As he took his last breath, his spirit ascended in the form a bird, Te Manu Muramura, passing through Rangitatau, the portal to the universe beyond.

Suspended above the main concourse, the artwork represents the local bird spirit Manu Muramura. The piece features translucent feathers, a 3D-printed head, and flame-inspired designs symbolising manaakitanga (hospitality).

Wellington Airport says the sculpture offers a uniquely local welcome for travellers. Designed in collaboration with artist Manukorihi Winiata, it blends storytelling, design, and spiritual meaning into a standout terminal feature.
