The SailGP Rio event has been cancelled. Originally planned for May 3–4, 2025, the race in Rio de Janeiro has been called off due to a safety issue found in the wingsails of SailGP’s high-speed F50 catamarans.
The issue surfaced after the Australian team’s wingsail collapsed during the San Francisco event in March. A detailed inspection revealed a bonding fault in the core material of some wingsails. This defect could weaken the boats and create safety risks during racing.
SailGP remains focused on putting safety first
SailGP CEO Russell Coutts said the decision was made to protect athletes, fans, and the overall integrity of the league. “We’re putting safety first,” he said. “Cancelling the Rio event gives teams the time they need to repair and fully inspect every wingsail.”
All ticket holders will get a full refund, and organisers are looking at future options to bring SailGP back to Brazil. With SailGP Rio cancelled, attention now turns to the next event in New York City, scheduled for June 7–8, 2025. All 12 national teams are expected to compete.
SailGP remains focused on delivering fast, competitive, and safe racing as it continues through Season 5.
