We’re proud to share that See New Zealand has joined the the Tourism Sustainability Commitment (TSC) – a nationwide programme led by Tourism Industry Aotearoa that brings together tourism operators committed to doing better for people, place, and future generations.
The vision behind the TSC is clear: for New Zealand to lead the world in sustainable tourism. That’s a goal we genuinely believe in – and one we’re happy to be working towards alongside others in the industry.
What does this mean in practice?
The Tourism Sustainability Commitment is built around 12 commitments, guided by the values of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection of our natural, built and cultural resources), Manaakitanga (respect, hospitality, generosity and care for others) and Whanaungatanga (working together and providing a sense of belonging).
For us, this means:
- Having a clear sustainability plan that covers all 12 commitments
- Making measurable progress over time – not just ticking boxes
- Embedding sustainability into how we operate day to day
- Sharing stories about the positive things happening across the tourism industry
- Reviewing and reporting on our progress each year
Importantly, the TSC recognises that sustainability is a journey. You don’t have to do everything at once – what matters is making a meaningful start and continuing to improve.
Why this matters to See New Zealand
See New Zealand exists to help people experience this country in a way that respects what makes it special – the landscapes, the communities, and the culture.
Being part of the Tourism Sustainability Commitment helps keep us accountable to that purpose. It gives structure to the work we’re already doing, and a framework to guide what we do next.
We’ll be using this commitment not just behind the scenes, but in how we:
- Create content
- Highlight responsible travel choices
- Support local operators and communities
- Tell better stories about sustainable tourism in Aotearoa
